Make It Visible, the apps
One app for each chapter. They run in the browser, with no account and no installation. The first load downloads R itself and can take a minute.
- Chapter 1Child Mortality, Four WaysOne dataset drawn four ways, one chart for each question.
- Chapter 1Datasaurus ExplorerThirteen datasets of 142 points each. All have the same means, standard deviations, and correlation. Each has a different shape.
- Chapter 2Perception LabRepeat the Cleveland and McGill experiment on yourself. Then time how fast you find one mark that differs from the rest.
- Chapter 3Chart AutopsyPick the question that finds the problem in a chart. Then compare the chart with the same chart drawn correctly.
- Chapter 4Same Data, Six ChartsRefugee data for one year, drawn six ways. Under each chart is the kind of question it answers and a finding computed from the selected year.
- Chapter 5Shape of a VariableOne variable drawn five ways to show its distribution, with a switch between counting districts and counting students.
- Chapter 6Two VariablesPick two measures for 172 college majors. The app draws a scatter plot, reports the correlation, and shows how much the correlation changes when one major is removed.
- Chapter 7Time and BaseJail and prison populations by state as counts, rates, or an index with a base year you can move. A bar under the chart shows how many counties reported each year.
- Chapter 8Same Place, Four MapsOne county variable drawn as four maps. The number of classes and the projection are the controls.
- Chapter 9Finish This ChartStart from the chart the library draws by default. Add color, type, and annotation until it is a finished figure.
- Chapter 10Give or TakeDraw one poll and read its interval. Draw a hundred and count how many cover the truth. Then give every poll the same lean and count again.
- Chapter 11Service GapsThe chapter's dashboard with three interactions: hover for a ZIP's values, a county filter, and two sliders that move the poverty and services thresholds.
- Chapter 12Data to StoryPick a country and a peer group. The app draws the gap to the peer median, splits the 2021 gap by age, and puts the three panels together. The last card shows a model's first-draft caption. Tick each claim the charts do not support.
